14th Duskin Leadership Training Program in Japan

It has been over a quarter century since our founding in 1981. The “Duskin Study Abroad Leaders Program for the Disabled” was initiated in the year of the United Nation's International Year of Disabled Persons, with the goal to assist persons with disabilities to achieve full participation, without discrimination, in the society. . . . .

We hope that many young people who have disabilities and who also possess courage and a belief in their ability to face and overcome tough difficulties and challenges, will apply to participate in our 14th Duskin Leadership Training Program in Japan.

Deadline for Applications is October 31, 2011

Mr. Ishaque Mia a leader who is hard of hearing(HOH) in Bangladesh had a meeting with few HOH/Deafened friends. They discussed about their problems and the necessity of an association they are considering how to proceed further to push the movement of people who are Hard of Hearing and Deafened in Bangladesh. (a full country report will be presented and publish in November).

British Airways apologizes for turning away girl with Down syndrome

British Airways has apologized for refusing to issue a plane ticket to a girl who has Down syndrome.

Alice Saunders, 12, had planned to fly from London's Gatwick Airport to Glasgow, Scotland, to visit her aunt, the Daily Mail reports. Her mother, Heather Saunders, 49, called the airline to book a ticket and told the agent that her daughter has Down syndrome but is very independent and that she wanted her to travel as an unaccompanied minor.

Nepali Hard of Hearing and Deafened people form a self help group

in connection with recently started movement of Hard of Hearing and Deafened people of Asia-Pacific region, 8 Hard of Hearing (HOH) and Deafened people in Nepal had their first meeting to discuss the need of HOH , Deafened movement in Nepal. And they; • agreed to start a group of people with HOH and Deafened movement in Nepal • formed a five member ad-hoc committee • decided to keep moving group informally for few more months and will register later. • proposed Name as “Association of Hard of Hearing and Deafened in Nepal” to be finalized by the next meeting consulting with friends. Similarly logo will be proposed in next meeting. • will have Informal weekly coffee meeting is organizing among group, to discuss about the further ideas. A full report will be available later in regional meeting at APCD building Bangkok Thailand this November 2011.

Industry Group SMPTE Makes Captioning Online Standard Available for Free

COAT applauds and thanks the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) for making publicly available a standard for captioning interoperability between broadcast TV and broadband video programming. This is an important and well-timed decision by SMPTE to release this openly as rules are pending from the FCC on this form of accessibility.

$100,000 Award for Apps Developers Who Connect Underserved People with Public Information

The Knight Foundation and FCC announced yesterday a new "Apps for Communities" contest to bring local information to underserved communities, such as people with disabilities. Winners will get up to $100,000 for developing software applications ("apps") that get personalized, actionable information to people who are the least likely to take advantage of the digital revolution.

New Vehicles for Gold Coast Seniors and Persons with Disability

Member for Albert Margaret Keech said the new fleet of buses, people movers and cars would strengthen the community spirit of elderly people and people with a disability on the Gold Coast.The Home and Community Care program is a joint Federal and State Government program that provides funding to support elderly people and people with a disability to remain living at home.
